Before you pack away your summer wardrobe… 🍂

It's officially that time of year again 🍂

The temperature is dropping, the evenings are getting darker, and we're slowly swapping our summer dresses and sandals for cosy jumpers, cardigans and coats.

But before you pack away your summer wardrobe and dig out your winter clothes, have you thought about having a little declutter first?

We know, another job to add to the list! But hear us out…

If you're someone who swaps their wardrobe around with the seasons, this is actually one of the best times to have a clear-out.

And here's why…

1. Start with the clothes you're putting away

Before you pack away your summer clothes, take a moment to look through what you've actually worn over the last few months.

Chances are, there are a few pieces you haven't touched all summer.

For anything you didn't wear, ask yourself:

  • Did I wear this at all over the summer?

  • If not, why didn't I wear it?

  • Does it still fit and feel comfortable?

  • Can I genuinely see myself wearing it next summer?

Our little tip: If you're unsure about something, you don't have to make a decision straight away.

Set it aside and give yourself some time to think. But if it's something you haven't worn for a couple of summers, it might be time to ask yourself whether it's worth holding on to.

Remember, just because you spent money on something doesn't mean you have to keep it forever.

2. Review your winter wardrobe before putting it away

Now for the fun part. Getting out all those cosy winter clothes!

Before you start filling your wardrobe and drawers, take a little time to look through everything.

A lot can change in six months, including your personal style, lifestyle and what you actually enjoy wearing.

You might pull out a jumper you loved last winter and think, "Hmm, that's just not me anymore."

And that's okay!

Rather than putting everything straight back into your wardrobe, use this opportunity to decide what deserves a place.

Anything you no longer love, wear or need can be donated, sold or recycled, depending on its condition.

The goal isn't to have fewer clothes for the sake of it. It's to have a wardrobe full of things you actually enjoy wearing.

3. Store your summer clothes properly

Once you've decided what you're keeping, it's time to pack everything away until next summer.

If you're short on wardrobe space, here are two storage solutions we'd recommend:

Vacuum storage bags

These can be great for saving space when storing suitable clothing and textiles, particularly if you're using a loft or another storage area.

Just be mindful of delicate fabrics and items that need to keep their shape, as vacuum packing isn't suitable for everything!

Soft storage bags or cubes

Perfect for making use of that often-forgotten space under the bed.

They're easy to access, can keep your clothes together and make swapping everything back over next summer much easier.

Whichever method you choose, make sure everything is clean and completely dry before packing it away.

And don't forget to label your storage bags! Trust us, future you will thank you.

4. Make it a twice-yearly habit

We know that the thought of sorting through your entire wardrobe can feel overwhelming, especially when you've already got a million other things to do.

But here's the thing…

The more regularly you review your wardrobe, the less work it becomes.

Rather than waiting until your wardrobe is bursting at the seams, try making a seasonal review part of your routine.

Once in autumn and once in spring.

It doesn't need to be a huge project. Even spending 15 to 20 minutes reviewing one section at a time can make a difference.

Over time, you'll become more aware of what you own, what you actually wear and what you no longer need.

And hopefully, those seasonal wardrobe changeovers will start to feel a lot less like a chore!

One last tip before the festive season…

We couldn't talk about winter wardrobes without mentioning Christmas jumpers and festive accessories!

Before you buy another Christmas jumper or yet another pair of sparkly earrings, have a little look at what you've already got.

You might be surprised by what you find!

Something we love encouraging is the one-in, one-out rule.

For every new item you bring into your wardrobe, consider whether there's something you no longer wear that could be donated or sold.

It's a simple way to be more mindful of what you're buying and avoid accumulating more than you need.

And remember, you don't need to buy something new for every occasion!

A little wardrobe reset goes a long way

Your wardrobe doesn't need to be perfectly organised, colour-coordinated or look like something straight off Pinterest.

It just needs to work for you.

Taking a little time to review what you own now can make getting dressed on those cold, dark winter mornings that bit easier.

And who doesn't want one less thing to think about in the morning?

Feeling overwhelmed by your wardrobe?

If you've been putting off that wardrobe declutter because you simply don't know where to start, that's exactly where we can help.

No judgement, no pressure and definitely no expectation of perfection.
